If you were told to "modernise" your teaching with almost no detail on what that actually meant, where would you even start?
That's roughly the instruction a lot of art educators have quietly received over the past few years: bring digital practice into the room, somehow, without much guidance on which parts of a vast, fast-moving field actually deserve real class time. The easy answer is to reach for whatever's most visible, usually a headset and a demo, and call it done. The harder, more useful answer is figuring out what genuinely belongs in a curriculum built to last longer than one trend cycle.
More Than a Headset
Virtual reality tends to get treated as the flashy centerpiece, the thing that photographs well for a school's marketing page. Handled properly, it's something else entirely: a serious compositional space with its own logic, worth the kind of sustained study usually reserved for painting or sculpture. As the people behind one recent training put it, VR deserves treatment "not just as a tool but also as the future of creative activities," which is a meaningfully different ambition than a single guest lecture with borrowed equipment.
Taught properly, that means students and educators alike spending real time on how presence and scale work differently once a viewer can walk around inside a piece rather than stand in front of it, not just learning which menu opens which tool.
The Parts Easy to Skip
The technical side of digital art gets most of the attention, largely because it's the easiest to demonstrate. The critical side gets skipped far more often, and it shouldn't be. Questions about authorship when a generative tool produces half the final image, about who owns a collaboratively built virtual space, about the environmental cost of the infrastructure a lot of this work quietly runs on, all belong in the same room as the technique itself, not bolted on as an afterthought in the final week.
A curriculum that only teaches the how and skips the why tends to produce technically fluent artists who've never actually been asked to defend a decision, which is a strange gap to leave in an art education specifically.
The Ground Keeps Moving
Even educators who genuinely try to keep up run into a different problem: the target doesn't hold still. Picture an art educator in her fifties, call her Dorotea, who spent a summer teaching herself a 3D modelling tool only to find half the interface rebuilt by the time autumn term started.
"I finally learned it," she says, "and then it wasn't the same programme anymore."
That's not a complaint about effort. It's an honest description of what self-teaching a fast-moving field actually feels like from the inside.
Another educator, further along in his own attempt, put it more bluntly:
"My students find the new version before I even hear it exists."
That gap, between a student's casual, ambient exposure to new tools and an educator's structured, scheduled attempt to catch up, is exactly what makes solo upskilling such an unreliable strategy. It's not that educators lack discipline. It's that nobody can out-improvise a field that reinvents its own basics every few months alone, on the side, after hours. After all, A digital art education isn't measured by how many tools get mentioned. It's measured by how many of them anyone actually knows how to think with.
Built Around What Actually Deserves the Time
None of this was left to guesswork. A training module developed inside the DIGARTED project, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, shaped by an actual needs assessment of where educators' digital confidence and competence genuinely fell short before a single lesson was written, gives art educators across several European countries a curriculum built around depth rather than novelty: virtual reality treated as a serious medium, the ethical and critical questions kept in the room rather than left out of it, and a real practical component so nobody finishes having only watched. It's described as the first resource of its kind to address this particular gap directly, rather than assuming it would close on its own.
