Who gets to be called an environmental hero, and why is it rarely someone over 65? What if the people we consult least on climate change are the ones with the longest memory of it?
Across Europe, senior artists are flipping the script on who gets to be an environmental hero. Instead of just talking about climate change, they're doing something about it, through art, community involvement, and learning new tricks (yes, even at 75). Arts and culture, mental health, elderly care, and social policy come together around a simple idea: creative practice can be a genuine route into environmental awareness, personal wellbeing, and community connection, not just one of the three.
Three Problems, One Framework
What's highlighted here are three interconnected goals: environmental action, civic engagement, and lifelong learning. The focus is on visual artists aged 65 and up, from those who've painted for decades to people discovering the practice for the first time, alongside the trainers, facilitators, and care professionals who support them. The aim is straightforward: help senior artists become "Green Actors of Change," proving that age is just a number when it comes to protecting the planet.
What's Taking Shape
Over the next few months, several strands of this work are rolling out across Slovakia, Italy, Spain, and Greece. Teams are visiting senior care facilities and inviting residents to create environmentally themed artwork, work that won't just sit in storage. It'll be shared in physical exhibitions and online galleries, giving these artists the spotlight they deserve.
At the heart of it all is a curriculum that blends climate know-how with digital skills, built to make both feel approachable rather than intimidating, whatever someone's starting point. That curriculum is also shaping an e-learning platform, where seniors can move through courses at their own pace and show off their environmental artwork alongside it.
There's also a practical toolkit on the way for the professionals and trainers working with seniors, giving them real strategies for helping the artists they support step into this kind of work. And rounding it all out is a podcast series featuring environmentally conscious senior artists, retired professionals and current creators alike, sharing their stories to inspire others in their age group.
The Bigger Picture
Once complete, these resources won't stay within the project. Organizations working in art, culture, environmental action, senior care, or lifelong learning will be able to access them freely, with the aim of showing that creative ageing, climate engagement, and inclusive learning aren't separate goals, but part of the same approach to environmental challenges. Age, in this framing, isn't a limitation on who gets to respond to the climate crisis. It's a form of experience the response has been missing.
