Integrating the New European Bauhaus into Art and Design Education

How can Art & Design education lead the green and digital transitions in Europe?

As the EU advances its climate ambitions through the European Green Deal and the New European Bauhaus (NEB), Art & Design education must confront a pressing reality: traditional models are no longer enough. The shift toward sustainability, inclusion, and digital innovation demands new skills, flexible learning formats, and a broader understanding of design's role in shaping everyday life. Yet current HE curricula remain fragmented, often disconnected from real-world challenges, and inaccessible to working professionals seeking to reskill or upskill. There is an urgent need to rethink not just what we teach - but how, where, and for whom. Grounded in research, co-creation, and transdisciplinary collaboration, Futures Designed introduces micro-credential courses and workshops focused on sustainable design in Interior, Graphic, and Fashion fields. These workshops are hosted in onsite and online alternative learning spaces that reflect NEB value: green, inclusive, and participatory. Through a multilingual e-learning platform, hands-on materials, and a flexible delivery model, the project equips students, educators, and professionals with the competencies needed to drive Europe’s creative industries toward a more sustainable, just, and beautiful future.
