Interview with Philippos Koutrikas

"My creative process goes beyond mere visual communication; it's about embodying a profound emotion, a lingering memory, or a significant idea – essentially, a piece of myself."

Interview with Philippos Koutrikas

Philippos Koutrikas crafts with quiet precision, driven by a dialogue between discipline and impulse, tradition and intuition. With a foundation built on technical mastery and a deep reverence for painting’s history, each work becomes a negotiation between feeling and structure. From spiritual roots to personal rituals, this practice reflects an unwavering search for meaning—an exploration of how form, tone, and silence might speak what language cannot. In Koutrikas' world, art is not only creation—it is communion, contemplation, and continuation.

How do you reconcile the tension between raw, innate creativity and the discipline required to master your craft?

Discipline is essential in both the creation and completion of a project. I start with a foundation grounded in the principles and rules of painting, using them as a guiding compass. From there, I allow myself to express my creativity in response to the external influences of my time and environment. Balancing raw, innate creativity with the discipline required to master a craft is an ongoing process. While creativity thrives when it is free, spontaneous, and unrestrained, discipline offers the structure needed to refine and elevate that creativity into something more polished and impactful. The key is to view discipline not as a restriction, but as a tool that channels raw ideas into something cohesive and meaningful.

Art is often chosen as a medium for its freedom. Why do you personally turn to art, rather than another form of expression?

Painting offers me a compelling avenue for expression, stemming from a deep inner urge to share a piece of myself with the world. I've long been captivated by painters and their remarkable ability to articulate their personal truths visually. What particularly draws me to this art form is its capacity to communicate volumes without explicit language. Through the strategic use of tone, form, and design, painting provides the opportunity to express emotions, thoughts, and contemplations. Though I experiment with diverse methods, oil paint consistently serves as my core medium.

Can you take us through the evolution of an artwork, from that first spark of inspiration to the finished piece?

Though I often start with a clear vision, the final artwork rarely mirrors my initial design. The act of painting feels guided by an external, inexplicable power, a process that paradoxically makes me feel incredibly empowered. In these moments, conscious rules fade as my hand seems to move independently. Yet, I do subconsciously draw upon foundational principles like composition, tone comparison, and form, using them as a flexible framework to bolster the emotional core of my expression. Because emotion stems from a place beyond logic, logic becomes a necessary counterpart. This constant negotiation between feeling and reason is essential for creating impactful work. In the end, the painting's own unfolding guides me to its completion.

Does spirituality or a connection to something larger than yourself influence your creative process?

Spirituality has been a powerful and evolving force in shaping my identity as an independent artist. My connection to something greater, rooted in my spiritual beliefs, has deeply impacted my creative journey. It fosters humility, offers spiritual guidance, and cultivates mental strength – qualities I consider essential for my artistic growth. Consequently, my unique artistic voice, the themes I explore, and my initial inspirations are all significantly informed by my spiritual worldview.

What do you think is the most meaningful role an artist plays in society today?

The artist's role today is versatile, potentially that of a modern "homo universalis" or simply a truth-seeking thinker. Essentially, the artist functions as a “messenger”, conveying ideas that may resonate, be rejected, or inspire thought within their audience, shaped by individual perceptions.

Questions you would ask your favorite artist?

✧ What gave you the strength to persevere in the most difficult times?

✧ What would you compare your ‘’will for painting” to?

✧ What are the elements that make up a skilled painter?

✧ Did your search finally reach the true essence of things?

✧ What mistakes in my work would you advise me to avoid?

What kind of legacy do you hope to leave in the art world?

I hope my artistic legacy will be one of genuine expression, innovative creation, and a deep resonance with the human condition. Furthermore, I wish to contribute to a vibrant and inclusive art world, seeking a meaningful connection between art and society.

Name fine pivotal lessons you have learned that shaped your artistic journey.

✧ The power of consistency. Progress doesn’t just come from bursts of inspiration, but from daily practice, even when motivation is low.

✧ Being open to criticism…although it’s not that easy, it helps you see your work from a different perspective. It also encourages you to improve.

✧ Experiment without fear.

✧ The testing of new technical materials and methods has led me to exciting discoveries through experimentation you discover your true voice. Art involves a dynamic of self-reinvention, my art often reflects my personal experiences, thoughts and feelings, this has helped me connect with my audience and stay true to my vision.

✧ Set high goals. You always achieve the corresponding goals you set.

Do you feel a personal connection to your subject?

Absolutely, I believe a personal connection to my subject matter is fundamental. My creative process goes beyond mere visual communication; it's about embodying a profound emotion, a lingering memory, or a significant idea – essentially, a piece of myself. This imbues my work with authenticity and vitality. When I feel a personal resonance with what I'm creating, it allows me to delve into topics and experiences that genuinely captivate me, fostering deeper exploration and experimentation. Ultimately, it's a way for me to share a part of my inner world with others.

Can art be truly therapeutic? Have you experienced its healing power personally or seen it impact others?

Art offers profound therapeutic benefits, serving as a channel for individuals to express intricate emotions, delve into their inner landscapes, and navigate challenges like stress, trauma, or grief. The act of creating or engaging with art can provide a sense of liberation and personal agency. For many, art creates a secure environment to explore and articulate feelings that might otherwise remain unspoken.

Do you have any rituals or habits that help you enter a creative state of flow?

My starting point in painting is to draw without self-criticism, letting my thoughts move freely and without constraints. This allows me to tap into the creative flow and overcome the initial apprehension of the empty canvas.

✦ ✦ ✦

At the core of Koutrikas' work lies a desire to reach beyond the surface—a commitment to honesty, resilience, and resonance. Through persistent experimentation and spiritual clarity, each painting becomes a space for questions rather than conclusions. The legacy being shaped is not only visual, but emotional: a body of work that listens as much as it speaks. In this pursuit of connection and truth, the canvas becomes not just a medium but a mirror of presence and possibility.
