ISSUE 15 - The world stands with Ukraine

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Artit’s 15th issue of the “Voice of Artists”, a series of journals that enable artists to share their work and communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas about contemporary issues. Artit was founded upon the belief that art is a powerful tool that facilitates self-expression and triggers change.

Our mission is to discover and reward contemporary visual artists around the globe who want to create a better version of the world we live in. This issue is about the war in Ukraine. The invasion of Ukraine has left the world in disbelief. Many of us living in nations free of conflict never get to think what it would be like to be forcibly displaced from our homes, our lives, our loved ones. The right to a peaceful, secure life is one we don’t often question. Artit couldn’t look the other way. We invited like-minded artists around to globe to do the same, not with words, but through art. With paintings, drawings, illustrations and collages from 80 visual artists, this publication shows the humanitarian catastrophe that people are going through and the cruel reality of war as it is felt every day. At the same time, it also reflects the fire of hope and defiance that comes with such tragedy.

On this issue, we stand united. Together with all the artists who shared a piece of themselves via their creations, and with all those people who strive for the best version of the world we live in. This audiovisual issue comes as a collaboration with the “Kyiv Classic Orchestra” and its conductor, UNESCO’s Artist of Peace, Herman Makarenko. Herman and his team use music as means to send a message of hope and courage to anyone who is listening. Joining forces in the name of peace with these musicians is a nothing but a true honour. Before you go through the publication, please scan the QR code on the following page and listen to the “Taras Bulba” melody performed by “Kyiv Classic Orchestra.

Danai Papadimitriou Torrens
Founder of Artit

A message from Herman Makarenko:
“First of all, I would like to thank Artit and its founder, Danai Papadimitriou, for organizing and implementing this a unique joint international project. Artit and Kyiv Classic are united by the belief that the universal language of art, influencing people’s souls, is able to change the world for a better place. We believe that art is a powerful tool for uniting people of goodwill and can stand against evil and violence. Following our ‘Concert of Peace’ performance at the Independence Square on March 9, 2022, this is our new, global and united action against the the war in Ukraine. Artists have always responded to the acute challenges of society, and with their work have tried to make this world more harmonious, kinder, and more beautiful. I sincerely wish to all the people of the planet, a peaceful blue sky above.”
